The teenager is charged in connection with a shooting that happened outside Jeremiah E. Burke High School in Dorchester on Tuesday, Oct. 4, the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office reports.
Police responded to a report of a person shot in the area of 60 Washington Street around 9:34 a.m., as previously reported by Daily Voice. Upon arrival, officers found another teenage boy suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to a local hospital in stable condition, according to Boston Police.
Responding officers also found several shell casings at the scene and obtained a description of the suspect shooter, the DA's office reports. The 17-year-old was arrested nearby and later hit with several charges including armed assault with intent to murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, the office reports. Authorities believe the suspect is also a student at the school.
“This is a horrific event in every possible aspect. There’s a young person with a bullet wound, another young person with a dramatically altered life path and a whole community of students and staffers who need and deserve all the help and support we can give them," District Attorney Kevin Hayden said. "Once again, we’re looking at the terrible consequences of too many guns and too many people willing to use them,” Hayden said.
The incident put the school in a safe mode while investigators searched the area and located the suspect. The 17-year-old will return to court for his dangerousness hearing on Oct. 11, the office reports.
